PROJECT 03 / Software development / Web
GMUnderground.
Understanding applications by building one.
A web project built around George Mason University, connecting application interfaces, authentication, a database, and deployment into a working development workflow.
01 / THE QUESTION
Why I started.
I wanted to build a web application around the George Mason University community and gain experience with the pieces behind an application, from the user interface to persistent data.
02 / THE APPROACH
What I’m building.
GMUnderground is a web development project using Next.js, authentication, Prisma, and PostgreSQL, with GitHub and Vercel in the development and deployment workflow.
- 01ApplicationNext.js interface & application logic
- 02IdentityAuthentication
- 03DataPrisma & PostgreSQL
- 04DeliveryGitHub & Vercel
03 / PROJECT COMPONENTS
The pieces in practice.
Web application development
Building the interface and application structure around a university-focused project.
Authentication
Working with authentication as part of the application’s user flow.
Database integration
Using Prisma and PostgreSQL to connect application behavior with persistent data.
Development workflow
Using GitHub for source control and Vercel for the deployment workflow.
APPLICATION CONCEPTS
04 / REFLECTION
What I’m learning.
Building software gives me a practical view of the applications I want to understand from a security perspective. This project is helping me connect authentication, data models, application architecture, and deployment.
05 / CURRENT STATUS
Still building. Still learning.
GMUnderground remains in development. It is a software development project, with its value here coming from hands-on application building and an understanding of how the pieces fit together.
